Have the urge to race with
others wheel to wheel? The SCCA's Club Racing program is a comprehensive,
nationwide program featuring races held throughout the year. These races
cater to the driver that prefers to test his or her skill on a part-time
basis, rather than compete full-time on SCCA's professional circuits. Many
professional racers have started out SCCA Club Racing.
Nearly half of all SCCA
members are involved in Club racing as drivers, crew, workers and/or
officials. More than 8,000 members have either National and/or Regional
competition licenses allowing them to compete in club races.
There are numerous classes in SCCA club racing which can be broken down into
4 major categories. Formula cars are the small open cockpit, open wheel
cars, often with front and rear wings. These classes include Formula V,
Formula Ford, Formula Atlantic, and others. Production cars are based on
actual cars like you see on the road. Some such as Showroom Stock cars are
basically as they were right off the Dealer's showroom floor with the
addition of a roll cage and other safety equipment. Other production based
cars are current or classic sports cars such as MGs, Mustangs, and Miatas
with varying levels of modifications. GT cars look like production cars but
are purpose built racing cars consisting of a tube frame body with a sheet
metal or fiberglass body. Sports Racers are full bodied purpose built race
cars, usually with an open cockpit. Sports Racers include the popular Spec
Racer class among others.
Getting started competing in Club Racing is a little harder than Road Rally
or Solo II.
However, there are many other ways to get involved in Club Racing, such as
crew member, course worker, timing and scoring, and others.
